Newbery Medal Winner 2008

Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!: Voices from a Medieval Village
by Laura Amy Schlitz
Newbery Medal Winner 2008

This novel is a great way to help students understand the times of the European Middle Ages in the year 1255. Schlitz has created a novel with seventeen monologues written through verse and prose. There are twenty three main characters all with very distinct personalities. There are short historical notes that are stated on the margin which are great discussion starters for teacher and students. This book also provides background information on farming, the Crusades, falconry, and more.

This book is fun to read because of the format of the writing. Each story consists of a short one story play that has fun rhythm in its writing style which makes it enjoyable to read. The illustrations are beautiful and really gives the reader insight to life during that era.
