Newbery Honor Book 2008

Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis
Newbery Honor Book 2008

Eleven year old Elijah Freeman was the first free-born child in Buxton, Canada. Buxton was a refugee camp for slaves fleeing America during the 1800’s. Eventhough, Elijah was never part of the slavery movement; he did see what slavery was all about. After a fugitive stole some money from his friend Mr. Leroy, Elijah traveled to America. In Michigan while hiding out in a barn, Elijah see first hand the mistreatment of the slaves. Although, wanting to help free the slaves, he was only able to save a baby girl.

This book will have your emotions run like a rollercoaster ride. At times you will laugh, you will feel nervousness, and you will probably cry. This is an amazing book to share with children to show them the real history of slavery and the Underground Railroad.
