The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzana by Margarita Engle
2008 Belpre Award for Text

This is a book based on a biography of Juan Francisco Manzana, a 19th century Cuban Poet. Engle writes about the horrible life of Juan Manzana as a young boy. He was a slave and had a female master by the name of Beatriz. He is an intelligent young boy who is well liked by his master. Sadly his master dies and is then transferred to another female slave Marquesa de Prado Amens who punishes him with cruelty.

This book reveals factual information about the Cuban slavery. However, I feel it maybe a little intense for some young readers. The cruelty that Juan Francisco endures is written in detail and may affect certain children.
