Newbery Honor Book 2008

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt
Newbery Honor Book 2008

Holling Hoodhood is a seventh grader and the only Presbyterian boy in his class. He does not have a great admiration for teachers, especially his own teacher, Mrs. Baker. He feels that she tortures him by having him read Shakespeare while the other students are in Catechism or Hebrew school. However, at the end he ends up finding comfort in both Mrs. Baker and William Shakespeare. The literature he has read makes him realize that there is more to life than what he expected.

This book deals with real life issues that will definitely attract the young teen reader. The author has created a character that is gentle and caring and will be well liked by the reader. I am just glad to see that this book dealing with the Vietnam War does end happily.
